Director of Nursing
Summary:  Under the general direction of the Senior Director of Clinical Services and in collaboration with medical and programmatic leadership, the Director of Nursing ensures effective implementation of clinical services that are aligned with organizational objectives and strategy and hospital policies within the designated departments.  The role is part of the direct medical services leadership team and provides central oversight and leadership of the Ward, Operating Room, Hospital Quality, Hospital Informatics, Infection Prevention & Control, and Palliative Care areas.  The director models proactive, collaborative working relationships across all business and hospital functions in an interdisciplinary approach to patient care.

**Compensation Range for This Position Is $100,000 - $109,000

Mercy Ships is seeking a Nursing Director to serve remotely. In this position you'll have the opportunity to support the International Programs Department initiatives of Mercy Ships to ensure continued delivery of hope to those in need through providing central oversight and leadership of the Ward, Operating Room, Hospital Quality, Hospital Informatics, Infection Prevention & Control, and Palliative Care areas in alignment with organizational objectives, strategies, and policies.

How You’ll Contribute

  • Drive the development and oversight of quality programs, activities and performance improvement to measure, assess and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to patients.
  • Support the execution of hospital, programmatic, and organizational objectives in a systematic and structured way.
  • Function independently within the framework of the organization and International Programs strategic direction, philosophy, objectives, policies and budget.
  • Provide clinical and operational support to the designated departments on both vessels.
  • Regularly identify growth initiatives, advocate for best practices and integrate them into a continuous improvement plan.
  • Stay well-versed on service line industry developments and initiatives. Provide guidance and recommendation to leadership.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for clinical matters related to quality, safety, clinical performance and effectiveness, as well as pertinent project work.
  • Review applicants for several ship-based hospital leadership position qualifications in areas this position oversees (credentialing).
  • Document needed positions in the staffing formation for each vessel.
  • Select candidates to fill staffing plans.
  • Provide remote or onboard training for team members as needed.
  • Travel Requirement: Approximately two (2) trips per year, domestically, and two (2) trips per year to a vessel, internationally (~6-8 weeks annually).

  • Knowledge of nursing clinical standards and hospital operations.
  • Knowledge of hospital patient flow principles.
  • Demonstrated credible leadership presence with the ability to establish effective working partnerships at all levels.
  • Ability to delegate effectively and manage multiple projects in a growing organization.
  • Demonstrated flexibility. Is adaptable to change and is able to inspire others to welcome change.
  • Written and oral fluency in English is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to be a team player and work well with others.
  • Able to be a self-starter, detail-oriented and organized. Takes initiative.
  • Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Requires occasional travel to the International Support Center and to the vessels.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or international equivalent, required.
  • Master's degree in Nursing or related field, preferred. Or at least 5 years' experience in clinical/healthcare management.
  • Active nursing license in home country.
  • A minimum of two years of leadership experience.
  • Recent experience in a tertiary hospital / multi-specialty surgical hospital, preferred.
  • Successful completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training will be required within the first year.
