Summary:  Coordinate the clinical care of the Maxillofacial patient population throughout the course of care with Mercy Ships. Responsible for creating a strong team of nurses and helping to give the best possible care. This role also usually carries the ICU coordinator role.

In Africa, where there is little or no access to healthcare services and specialized surgeries needed to deal with maladies such as facial tumors, cleft lip & cleft palate, and ENT diseases, our maxillofacial and otolaryngology teams fill the void by bringing hope and healing.  

The Ward Nurse Maxillofacial Team Leader volunteer position, part of the Ward, will be located on the Africa Mercy and Global Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ships. The preferred minimum time commitment for this role is two years. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than twelve months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program.

Qualifications Required:

  • Mercy Ships alumni required 
  • Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner with active license in home country
  • Minimum three years' experience needed after licensure
  • Current Basic Life Support is required; ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) are optional
  • Recent inpatient surgical/medical/Emergency Room experience of at least two years full-time or three years part-time in the past 5 years AND at the point of application can show working 30 hours or more per week in an acute inpatient surgical/medical/Emergency Room setting within the past 12 months
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Fluent in English
