Summary:  Assist in mentoring local clinicians in the Ponseti method of correcting clubfoot and in coordinating the set-up of a locally run, sustainable Ponseti clinic. Assists in the management (pre and post-op) of older clubfoot patients who are part of the orthopedic surgery program.

Our Clubfoot Program team works with patients to correct and repair clubfeet, giving these individuals a second chance at a fulfilling life. Additionally, the Clubfoot Program team works extensively with local medical professionals, teaching and mentoring in the Ponseti method. 

The Clubfoot Program Physical Therapist volunteer position, part of the Medical Capacity Building team, will be located on the Africa Mercy and Global Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ships. The preferred minimum commitment for this role is ten months. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than twelve months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program

Qualifications required:

  • Current/active Registered Physical Therapist License in home country
  • Completed Ponseti specific training with a recognized individual or organization
  • Treated a minimum of 10-15 clubfeet or has at least 6-12 months experience with treating clubfeet.  Experience and demonstrated skills in Ponseti method
  • PIA Ponseti Provider accreditation or ACT Train the Trainer accreditation (or must be working towards one of these)
  • Computer skills required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Fluent in English
  • Proficiency in French to B2 level preferred
  • International Driver's Permit preferred
