Summary:  Provide spiritual and emotional end-of-life care to people who are suffering of a terminal illness, under the direction of the Palliative Care Team Leader. By caring for those often isolated, hopeless, and fearful people, this position is a living example of God's love and compassion for the weak, lonely, and marginalized members of society. This position works primarily off-ship; hot and dusty or wet(depending on season) conditions can be expected. Visiting people in their houses requires cultural sensitivity.

Unfortunately, we cannot help everyone. Our palliative care team is there to bring hope and healing to those who are terminally ill, who are unable to be helped by safe surgery. They offer health care services, training, and spiritual & emotional support to these patients as well as their families.  

The Palliative Care Chaplain  volunteer position, part of the Hospital, will be located on the Africa Mercy and Global Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ships. The preferred minimum time commitment for this role is ten months. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than twelve months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program.

Qualifications Required:

  • Experience in emotional and spiritual care for terminal people is required, preferably in a low-resource setting
  • Some theological education and training in counseling or pastoral care is required
  • Fluent in English
  • International Driver's Permit required
