Summary:  Supports Medical Capacity Building (MCB) Director in the development and implementation of MCB programs both onboard and off ship to ensure that the MCB goals are achieved each field service and reports completed. Develops and maintains strong relations with local partners and government officials.

Our Medical Capacity Building team is what truly makes Mercy Ships a unique organization. While the ships focus on serving patients in immediate need, our MCB Team works “off ship” to train, mentor, and equip local medical professionals to serve their communities long after we have departed. Because the goal has always been to work ourselves out of a job.

The Project Manager - Safe Surgery volunteer position, part of the Hospital, will be located on the Africa Mercy and Global Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ships. The preferred minimum commitment for this role is two years. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than twelve months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program

Qualifications required:

  • Successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding program required
  • Bachelor's Degree required and some experience in Health Care Development/Medical Education preferred
  • Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education/Public Health/International Development desirable
  • Previous Mercy Ships experience preferred
  • Excellent organizational and relational skills
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Fluent in English 
  • Must have French language skills- International B1 level (or equivalent), B2 desirable
  • International Driver's Permit required with at least five years' driving experience preferred.
