***This is an interim position, designed to assist with transitional needs across a period of approximately 6 months from hire***

Manage the delivery of Mercy Ships financial planning and analysis activities, including ongoing budgeting and reforecast processes. 

Essential Duties And Responsibilities (Include But Not Limited To)

Accounting Activities

    • Support the month-end close process, including efforts for a ‘quicker monthly close.’
    • Interpret financial information and events for users who must make economic or business decisions.
    • Record, classify, and summarize financial transactions and events in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
    • Initiates and processes journal entries into various accounts.
    • Provide information to management, staff, and individuals or organizations outside of Mercy Ships as required, i.e., explaining accounting transactions, resolving accounting issues and discrepancies.
    • Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, and graphical packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports. 
    • Prepare audit work papers for assigned areas of responsibility.
    • Review, investigate, and correct errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents, and reports.
    • Monitor compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and company procedures.
    • Answer accounting and financial questions by researching and interpreting data
    • Look for and implement process improvements. 
    • Other duties as assigned.

Financial Planning & Analysis Activities

    • Management of the FP&A function including 2 direct reports
    • Work in close collaboration with Mercy Ships’ senior leaders (including C-Suite), to formulate the organization’s medium and longer term financial and strategic plans.
    • Provision of monthly reporting and analysis packs with accompanying commentary re the financial performance of Mercy Ships
    • Consolidate and oversee all aspects of centralized budgeting, long-term planning, financial reporting, analytics, and KPIs.
    • Work with dept heads and business leaders to build their budgets and forecasts.
    • Analyze financial and operational results to provide meaningful insights into performance.
    • Lead educational and transparency initiatives for all financial stakeholders.
    • Manage and develop BI tools that can be used by teams across Mercy Ships to provide relevant and timely insights.
    • Prepare business cases to support new initiatives and strategies.
    • Review processes and procedures to identify and implement improvements.
    • Supervise staff in financial planning and analytics team to achieve team goals.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Education And Experience

The requirements listed below are representative of the education and / or experience required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Over 5 years of accounting experience (non-profit environment preferred).
  • Previous experience in a non-profit financial planning or accounting desired.
  • Previous work in a multi-cultural environment preferred.
  • High proficiency in Excel.
  • PC skills in Outlook, Word, Internet navigation, and ability to learn new software quickly.
  • Successful completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training will be required within the first year.
