**Compensation Range for This Position Is $73,000 - $78,100

 

Mercy Ships is seeking a Medical Review Nurse Manager to lead and manage the Medical Review Team (MRT) to ensure timely, efficient, and high-quality medical readiness processing for incoming volunteers and other Mercy Ships personnel. This role provides day-to-day oversight of the team, establishes and maintains customer service standards, ensures consistency in medical review procedures, and serves as the escalation point for complex or sensitive cases.

In close collaboration with Occupational Health and outsourced review partners (e.g., VIKAND), the Medical Review Nurse Manager ensures that internal workflows are aligned with broader clinical standards and regulatory requirements. This position plays a key role in safeguarding volunteer health and readiness while upholding excellent service experience throughout the medical review process.

 

How You’ll Contribute

  • Provide direct supervision, coaching, and support to the Medical Review Team (MRT), ensuring workload distribution, capacity planning, and timely response to applicant needs.
  • Oversee and guide medical reviews for all Mercy Ships personnel, including new applicants, alumni, staff, contractors, guests, visitors, and those returning from medical leave.
  • Act as the clinical health subject matter expert, offering advice and leadership in occupational and maritime health, including immunizations and fitness-for-duty standards.
  • Lead complex or high-risk medical reviews, providing advanced clinical judgment, and consult with the Director of Crew and Occupational Health or Medical Advisory Group when needed.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for consistent, efficient medical record processing and ensure regular review and updates of policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Crew and Occupational Health and Policy Lead to develop and maintain a clinical governance framework focused on clinical excellence, quality management, audit, safeguarding, and compliance with health data privacy standards.
  • Establish and uphold standards for outstanding customer service and communication with individuals undergoing medical review, including managing complex or challenging cases or complaints.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships and aligned processes with onboard departments such as Crew Clinics and Pharmacy.
  • Oversee and coordinate partnerships with outsourced medical review providers, ensuring clear workflows, timely processing, and alignment with Mercy Ships' internal standards.
  • Act as a liaison across Volunteer Recruiting, Volunteer Operations and other departments to ensure smooth applicant handoffs and process clarity.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and report on key performance indicators related to medical review timelines, issue resolution, volunteer satisfaction, and team performance; identify and implement opportunities for improvement in collaboration with the Director of Crew and Occupational Health.
  • Collate data for reporting and analysis in partnership with the Hospital Informatics Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • This position supervises employees in a managerial or supervisory role. Responsible for carrying out managerial and leadership functions of the role that includes but are not limited to: recruitment and hiring, training and development of employees, assigning and directing work and duties, conducting disciplinary action when needed, and pursuing conflict resolution and hard conversations when needed.

  • This is a full-time professional position, and the candidate must be fully available during designated working hours. The candidate must not have competing commitments (such as childcare, secondary employment, or other daytime obligations) that would interfere with their ability to focus on work responsibilities.

    The Ideal Candidate

  • Strong understanding of occupational health assessment and review processes, including medical documentation, terminology, and health risk assessments
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Good knowledge and understanding of current and relevant occupational, epidemiological, and global health issues as demonstrated by qualification or work experience.
  • Ability to manage sensitive protected health-related information (PHI) with professionalism and discretion
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with a service-oriented mindset
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting policy implementation
  • Strong administrative skills and attention to detail
  • Experience using electronic medical record (EMR) and data entry platforms
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Outlook and Word.
  • Fluency in English is essential; additional language skills are beneficial.
  • Advanced customer service skills include cross-cultural awareness, sensitivity to language, and cultural diversity.
  • Ability to work remotely with skills in time management, self-motivation, adaptability, and administrative and operational proficiency while maintaining a strong work ethic.

Education & Experience

Required

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license or equivalent clinical credential.
  • 5 years of post-nursing qualification professional experience.
  • 2 years of experience in occupational health, medical review, or relevant clinical area.
  • 3 years of managerial or supervisory experience.
  • Working knowledge of health compliance regulations (e.g., HIPAA in the U.S. and GDPR in Europe).
  • Successful completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training will be required within the first year.

    Preferred

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degrees in nursing, Occupational Health, Public Health, or Global Health.
  • Prior experience with Mercy Ships.
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural or international volunteer or nonprofit setting.
  • Familiarity with outsourced clinical review partnerships or third-party providers.
  • Experience with volunteer onboarding or readiness processes.
