The Opportunity

The Biomedical Services Coordinator supports the on-ship Biomedical Team by providing remote technical assistance and managing procurement activities related to medical, dental, surgical, and off-ship program equipment. This position is essential for ensuring the functionality and availability of equipment critical to delivering safe, effective care in Mercy Ships' hospital operations.

This is a full-time remote position, with the expectation of occasional travel to one of our warehouses and/or ships  typically at least once per year.

 

How You’ll Contribute
To perform this role successfully, the individual must be able to carry out each essential duty with competence and professionalism:

  • Procure and issue needed Direct Medical Services (DMS) program technical medical equipment.
  • Engage and cultivate long-term relationships with companies and individuals to sustain medical equipment needs.
  • Provide technical consultation on medical, dental, and surgical equipment use and standardization across both ships.
  • Review preventive maintenance outcomes and advise DMS Program staff on improvements and replacement strategies.
  • Monitor all biomedical equipment and part/supply purchases, including shipment tracking.
  • Troubleshoot and communicate with internal departments to resolve equipment issues.
  • Provide remote support for the repair, installation, calibration, modification, and inspection of complex medical equipment.
  • Identify and lead continuous improvement initiatives related to biomedical services.
  • Monitor inventory levels and initiate procurement processes based on ship requests.
  • Utilize AIMS Biomedical Equipment Tracking Software (CMMS system); experience is a plus.
  • Temporarily substitute for (Senior) Biomedical Technicians during PTO or other absences, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Requirements)
The following requirements represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities essential for successful performance in this role:

  • Knowledge of the healthcare industry, hospital operations, and medical equipment manufacturers.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills (listening, writing, and speaking).
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Capable of leading or participating in small projects.
  • Able to collaborate with DMS staff to identify and fulfill equipment needs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Ability to work with CMMS systems to input data and generate reports.
  • Confident using video calls, phone systems, and practicing customer service to engage external partners.
  • Culturally sensitive and collaborative, despite remote working conditions and time zones.
  • Preferably able to use biomedical test equipment and interpret test reports (e.g., Fluke).
  • Demonstrates high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Willing and able to travel internationally; must obtain proper documentation for travel to the ship’s location.

Education and Experience
The following qualifications are representative of the education and experience typically required for this role:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years of hospital experience as a biomedical technician or coordinator, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferably has team leadership experience, with skills in supervising and coaching technical personnel.
  • Preferably advanced proficiency in Excel.
  • Preferably an alum of Mercy Ships with knowledge of ship and community life.
  • Completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training is required within the first year.
