Plans and supports the provision of surgical services in the Operating Room (OR) departments onboard Mercy Ships vessels.

 

Responsible for staffing, equipment, and required stock for each field service.  Manages equipment procurement with the biomedical team.  Ensures the highest standards of clinical practice are upheld.  Develops policies and procedures as needed and ensures documents are current, comprehensive, and effective.  Provides centralized clinical support to both the AFM and GLM departments.  

Essential Duties And Responsibilities (Include But Not Limited To)

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Clinical:

  • Support the execution of hospital, programmatic, and organizational objectives in a systematic and structured way.  
  • Develop policies and procedures as needed and ensure documents are current, comprehensive, and effective.  
  • Provide clinical and operational support to both the AFM and GLM OR departments.
  • Create a departmental plan to ensure hospital objectives are met.
  • Utilize monitoring tools to track and report on the performance of the service line.  Create tools if none exist.
  • Regularly identify growth initiatives, advocate for best practices and integrate them into a continuous improvement plan.  
  • Coordinate with the biomedical team for equipment preventative maintenance, repair, and replacement. 
  • Provide input for the annual budget of the Hospital.
  • Act as the Operating Room subject matter expect for:
    • Clinical matters related to quality, safety, clinical performance and effectiveness (clinical governance)
    • Project work (e.g., Electronic health record development, annual maintenance periods, etc.)

Staffing:

  • Review applicants for OR position qualifications (except surgeons and anesthesia providers)
  • Document needed positions in the staffing formation for each vessel.
  • Select candidates to fill staffing plans.
  • Assist with the development of recruitment strategy for OR positions
  • Attend industry conferences as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned

  • May require occasional travel to the International Support Center and to the vessels.
  • Ability to be a team player and work well with others
  • Knowledge of operating room standards and equipment

Education And Experience

The requirements listed below are representative of the education and / or experience required.

  • High school diploma required - Bachelors Degree in relevant field or equivalent working experience preferred. 
  • Registered Nurse with active license in home country.
  • Minimum two years full time experience following license in an acute hospital setting
  • Mercy Ships operating room department experience is strongly preferred but not required.  
  • Successful completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training will be required within the first year.
