Job Summary

Summary Description

The Child Safety Program Manager is responsible for the effective and efficient function of the Child Safety Program of Mercy Ships internationally, which includes maintaining all child safety screening requirements, coordinating child safety training, record keeping and document management, coordinating risk management plans, and internal communication related to the program.

How You’ll Contribute

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Manage the Child Safety Program, to include: 

  • Conduct regular meetings with vessel Child Safety Officers to provide program management support.
  • Controlling and updating related documents within the organization’s information management systems.
  • Controlling relevant records within the organization’s information management systems.
  • Monitoring the screening of applicants as performed by the Human Resources department.
  • Conduct multilayered child safety screenings for staff and volunteers working directly with children, including conducting child safety interviews and collecting references.
  • Monitoring the training of staff and crew, including children, and national day volunteers as coordinated by the Learning and Development department; and coordinate additional Child Safety trainings, including logistics, facilitators, and maintaining training records.
  • Manage and coordinate the development of childcare protocols across all locations and programs.
  • Coordinating member care with the organization’s Chaplains and external professional care providers as necessary.
  • Communicating with affected individuals as required.
  • Administering approved follow-up plans, including on-going member care and/or improvements to the child safety program.
  • Manage Risk Management Plans at all Mercy Ships locations, in collaboration with vessel Child Safety Officers.
  • Provide training for department heads and managers on Child Safety Risk Management Planning Process.
  • Liaise with the Child Safety and Protection Network.
  • Representing the organization as a member in matters of governance of the network.
  • Responding to requests of the network members for assistance.
  • Making requests of network members for assistance as needed.
  • Prepare regular Newsletters focused on Child Safety Trends to share internally to highlight child safety concerns.
  • Manage the annual budget of operating expenses for the Child Safety Program and manage those expenses with the Finance department.
  • Other duties as assigned by Legal Counsel

The Ideal Candidate Will Demonstrate:

  • Maintain a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and participate in departmental devotions and ISC and Global Gatherings.
  • Knowledge of the organization’s child safety program and its essential elements, including relevant legal requirements.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations with discretion and integrity.
  • Ability to gather and analyze information and to report effectively both verbally and in writing as required.
  • Ability to manage multiple important tasks and projects at the same time; ability to effectively prioritize work and to delegate responsibilities.
  • Ability to travel internationally with a current passport.
  • Ability to travel globally with little notice to support vessels and National Offices, approximately 30 – 45 days per year.
  • Must be able to meet Mercy Ships travel requirements.
  • All visitors to a vessel in field service are required to be up to date with WHO-approved vaccines.
  • Clear criminal records background check.
  • Detail Oriented.
  • Proficiency at a technical professional level in speaking and writing the English language; skills in additional languages is preferred.
  • Understand and apply servant leadership, work collaboratively with integrity, and demonstrate accountability.

Education And Experience

The requirements listed below are representative of the education and/or experience required.

  • Four-year university degree (BA, BSc, or equivalent).
  • Experience in a management position directly engaged in child safety program design and administration, is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of use and operation of the organization’s information management technology applications. 
  • Completion of the Child Safety and Protection Network’s Response Team Training (RTT) course and Programme Essential Training (PET) Course to be completed upon hire.
  • Successful completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training will be required within the first year.
