Summary Description
Under the direction of the Legal Compliance and Safeguarding Officer, the Senior Manager of Global Investigations is responsible for building out the Global Investigations function for Mercy Ships and the Mercy Ships family of charities. This includes collaborating with internal teams, managing resources, defining a strategy, and training and organizing a team of fact finders. This role has global impact and visibility. The right person thrives in a fast-paced environment, loves finding solutions to challenging problems, and can influence and navigate in a fast-moving, matrixed organization.
How You’ll Contribute
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Lead Global Investigations, to include:
- Conduct lawful, detailed, standard investigations that reflect the ethos of Mercy Ships Core Values and align with local and global legal regulations.
- Conduct investigations of reported concerns throughout the Mercy Ships family of organizations.
- Draft legal investigation reports and summary reports for management as needed.
- Apply local and global regulatory standards to make recommendations following investigations.
- Maintain accurate, retrievable, and confidential records of investigations.
- Control relevant records within the organization’s information management systems.
- Coordinate with Chaplaincy and Member Care for the good of participants in investigations.
- Coordinate with Security and Safety for the good of participants in investigations.
- Maintain a reporting process to keep Mercy Ships Legal Counsel aware of complete, on-going, and even potential investigations as appropriate.
- Communicating with affected individuals as appropriate.
- Mentor, develop, coach, and support investigators across all Mercy Ships departments, levels, and locations.
- Conduct reviews and assessments of investigation response and remediation areas, including cultural and safety considerations. Work with leadership to identify program-specific issues and methods to manage and mitigate risks.
- Continue development of beneficiary and staff reporting mechanisms, ensuring Mercy Ships has appropriate reporting mechanisms in place. Coordinate with the legal team to make recommended enhancements to the reporting system outlined in Mercy Ships’ Whistleblower Policy.
- Identify policy gaps and make recommendations of remedies to management.

- Ability to travel internationally with a current passport.
- Ability to travel globally with little notice to support vessels and National Offices, approximately 30 – 45 days per year.
- Must be able to meet Mercy Ships travel requirements.
- All visitors to a vessel in field service are required to be up to date with WHO-approved vaccines.

Education And Experience
The requirements listed below are representative of the education and/or experience required.
- Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university required in relevant field; and 5+ years’ experience overseeing and leading complex investigations; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with international non-profit(s) in humanitarian management skills preferred.
- Demonstrated experience managing investigations and teams with an international scope.
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of use and operation of the organization’s information management technology applications.
- Experience working with vulnerable children and adults.
- Experience working in multi-cultural environments, often in very challenging situations.
- Capacity building and change management skill set.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with competency on the development and delivery of training.
- Investigations experience with sexual abuse and exploitation or workplace sexual harassment.
- Successful completion of Mercy Ships’ Gateway will be required within the first year.
