Mercy Ships is seeking a Medical Review Nurse to play a critical role in safeguarding the health and wellbeing of Mercy Ships volunteers, staff, and guests by conducting comprehensive medical reviews and ensuring alignment with maritime and occupational health standards. This position is responsible for reviewing and evaluating medical documentation, communicating decisions with care and professionalism, and supporting the ongoing development of medical review systems and processes. Working closely with internal departments and external partners, the Medical Reviewer contributes to a safe, healthy, and service-ready crew environment.

 

This role requires clinical expertise, strong administrative capabilities, and a deep commitment to excellent customer service, especially in a cross-cultural and mission-driven context. The ideal candidate is a licensed nurse with experience in occupational or global health and who thrives in both collaborative and remote work environments.

 

How You’ll Contribute

Medical Review & Clinical Oversight

  • Conduct medical reviews for all categories of Mercy Ships personnel, including new applicants, alumni, staff, contractors, guests, visitors, and those returning from medical leave.
  • Review complex cases referred by our external medical provider and determine appropriate next steps—this may include assigning Wellness programs, managing medications, or developing vaccination plans.
  • Maintain up-to-date expertise in occupational and maritime health, including immunizations and maritime fitness standards.
  • Communicate with onboard Crew Clinics regarding:
  • Crew enrolled in Wellness management programs for chronic conditions
  • Clinical alerts
  • Immunization requirements

    Communication & Customer Service

  • Notify applicants of medical decisions, including communicating sensitive information such as medical denials, with care and professionalism.
  • Respond to health-related inquiries from applicants, volunteers, staff, and guests in a timely and respectful manner.
  • Collaborate with Volunteer Operations, Crew Clinics, onboard pharmacies, and other teams to resolve any issues related to health reviews.

    Data Management & Compliance

  • Process all health reviews, ensuring timely receipt and documentation of required medical information.
  • Accurately transcribe protected health information (PHI) into the employee health portal and meet weekly processing targets.
  • Maintain all health records in line with data protection regulations such as HIPAA and GDPR.

    Systems & Process Improvement

  • Help maintain and improve the Electronic Healthcare System:
  • Update user training manuals
  • Provide system training as needed
  • Contribute to the Crew and Occupational Health intranet space, ensuring content is up-to-date and helpful.
  • Support the development and updating of standard operating procedures and training materials.
  • Maintain statistical records and assist with clinical audits.
  • Suggest improvements to enhance the efficiency and quality of the medical review process.

    The Ideal Candidate

  • Clinical and Health Knowledge
  • Experience conducting clinical or occupational health assessments or medical reviews.
  • Familiarity with occupational, epidemiological, and global health issues—demonstrated through relevant qualifications or work experience.
  • Experience supporting the implementation of health-related policies.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a commitment to exceptional customer service and cross-cultural awareness

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook and Word.

    Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English is essential.
  • Additional language skills are an asset.

Education & Experience

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with a current and valid nursing license.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience following nursing qualification.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Occupational health
  • Public health
  • Global health
  • Or a related field.
  • Successful completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training will be required within the first year.

    Preferred

  • Clinical experience in Occupational Health or Public/Global Health settings.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing, Occupational Health, or Public/Global Health.
  • Prior experience working with Mercy Ships is highly valued.
