Academy Assistant Superintendent
Summary:  Responsible for the establishment and development of the Mercy Ships Academy Systems Accreditation through ACSI and Middle States, including monitoring the Continuous School Improvement Plan and Communication Plan.  Also, responsible for recruiting, staffing and developing the teaching team on both ships, in collaboration with Ship Principals and Human Resources. Responsible for collecting and analyzing stakeholder feedback and student achievement data to be used to make effective decisions in the area of program development and improvement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Include But Not Limited To)

Recruitment and Staffing

  • Develop and maintain a recruiting strategy that attracts long-term teachers in conjunction with the Human Resources Department
  • Supervise and monitor the recruiting and staffing of all school staff
  • Reviews all new staff applications for all schools
  • Develop staff retention plans and provide Mercy Ships career path consultation, in collaboration with the Superintendent. 

    Attain and Maintain ACSI Systems Accreditation for all ship schools

  • Oversee and maintain accreditation standards and achievement of major recommendations
  • Supervise the progress and implementation of the Continuous School Improvement Plan, in collaboration with the Superintendent. 
  • Liaison with accreditation organizations, to maintain effective communication and relationships. 

    Manage the Development and Training of Teaching Staff

  • Facilitate Beginning of Year Teacher Training (Teacher Orientation Week) on both ships
  • Develop and implement a continual Professional Development Program on board both ships
  • Development of Teachers Master’s Program, as part of the Teacher Retention Plan 
  • Full development of an effective performance review cycle, which includes classroom observations, professional development goals and feedback looking for ongoing professional growth of teachers, in collaboration with Human Resources
  • Facilitate Onboarding Orientation for Teachers, in coordination with the On Boarding Director 

Establish and maintain and effective communication and feedback plan

  • Map and manage effective communication methods for all stakeholders, internal and external
  • Develop an annual survey plan, to collect year on year feedback to be used by Academy Leadership to make data driven decision. 
  • Collect and collate annual student’s achievement data to be used to plan future growth and development

Manage the Student Placement Reviews and Standardized Testing

  • Coordinate the review and assess placement of all new student applications, in collaboration with the Ship Principals
  • Coordinate annual standardized testing on board all ships, in collaboration with the Ship Principals

  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications is required. Possess aptitude for learning new computer applications.
  • Ability to develop and facilitate training for all teaching staff
  • Ability to travel internationally for Teacher Training Week, mid-year visit, and other events as needed

Education and Experience:

The requirements listed below are representative of the education and / or experience required.

  • Successful completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training will be required within the first year. 
  • Minimum of five years’ teaching experience including international and Christian education (preferably min. of 2 years onboard a Mercy Ship)
  • Master’s degrees in educational leadership and/or management (preferred)
  • School Leadership Experience at an Administrator, Principal or Senior School Leadership Level (two year minimum)
  • Experience in international school accreditation (highly recommended)
  • Obtain ACSI Administration/Superintendent Standard Certification
  • Successfully complete a full Child Safety Screening, including background check. 
  • Successful completion of Mercy Ships' child safety training for managers within 90 days of service date.
  • Successful completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training will be required within the first year.
