Mercy Ships is a global faith-based charity that uses hospital ships to bring life-changing surgeries and transformational medical training to people in some of the most challenging contexts along the African coast. For over 40 years, Mercy Ships has been delivering lasting hope and healing through safe surgical care, while working alongside partners and stakeholders to strengthen local healthcare systems in more than 55 countries. Since the inception of this dream by founders Don and Deyon Stephens in 1978, Mercy Ships has served more than 2.7 million direct beneficiaries without regard for race, gender, or religion.
This is a full-time, REMOTE role that requires international travel. The pay range is $80-$90K based on experience.

The Technical Support Officer will Support the Senior Technical Superintendent in the operation of company vessels, assisting in the repair and maintenance functions to minimize down-time and cost of repairs. Serve on board Company vessels as Engineering officer as needed.
How You’ll Contribute
- Support in preparation of work plans for major repairs, modifications, annual refits, and drydockings of Company ships.
- As necessary, inspect machinery, equipment, or spaces outlined in work request; draw up job specifications; and obtain bids from contractors or shipyards to perform repairs.
- Maintain contact with contractors to ensure completion of work according to contract terms.
- Update plans procedures as directed.
- Liaise with vendor and regulatory agencies to ensure that requirements for alterations, repair, or modifications are kept at minimum cost consistent with safety.
- Review and advise on qualifications of technical staff and/or applicants as requested.
- Maintain proficient knowledge of Company SMS; assist Safety Manager to ensure safe working practices are followed on Company ships.
- Serve on each Company ship as required to fill vacancies in the Engineering Officer roster, up to and including Chief Engineer, between 3 - 6 months per year as per STCW CoC level.
- Other duties as assigned.
The Ideal Candidate
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, contractors, suppliers, and the general public.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Ability to travel nationally and internationally.
- Valid Certificate of Competency in accordance with STCW 111/1 or 111/2 required.

Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree (B.Sc.) from four-year College or University; or four years related industry experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Use of Autocad preferred but not essential.
- Successful completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training will be required within the first year.
