Director of Marketing has the over-reaching goal to make Mercy Ships a trusted, household name in the USA. This position is responsible for the strategic direction, planning, implementing, and measuring the success of the marketing strategies to establish new market presence, increase brand awareness and position the organization for growth in the US. The Marketing Director collaborates with the VP of Advancement on the development and implementation of support material for marketing initiatives. This position directs the efforts of all marketing staff and coordinates, at the strategic and tactical levels, with other functions of the organization.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities (Include But Not Limited To)

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

    • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic marketing plan, including both short and long-range goals that will enhance the organization's image and position in the US marketplace and incrementally increase the donor base and revenue streams.
    • Develop and execute all online marketing strategies, products, services, and websites to increase brand awareness and web giving.
    • Ensure that evaluation systems are in place related to the goals and objectives and provide ongoing progress reports to management.
    • Collaborate with the VP of Advancement to design, test, and place print, television, and radio advertisements in targeted markets.
    • Manage the day-to-day administrative operation of the marketing department and the performance and achievement of objectives and tactics as defined in the strategic plan for marketing.
    • Carry out department employee management responsibilities in accordance with organization's policies which include: planning, assigning, training and directing work; appraising performance and reviewing compensation; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
    • Prepare budgetary recommendations that meet departmental goals and provide for effective management of resources. Prepare and administer budgets and plan the program of work for the Department.
    • Collaborate with all department directors in creating systems, initiatives and collateral materials that are strategically aligned, both internally and externally.
    • Keep informed of developments in the field of US marketing and use this information to help the organization operate with initiative and innovation.
    • Provide staff support for the Board of Directors and Board management committees and coordinate marketing activities with all members of the management team of Mercy Ships, subject to the direction of the VP of Advancement.
    • Set and pursue personal, spiritual and professional growth and education objectives, and manage time to meet those objectives.
    • Participate as member of Crisis Management Team. 
    • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, And Requirements)

    • An understanding of the Mercy Ships healthcare delivery system including the model, the message, the methods, and the metrics, by which its mission is accomplished.
    • An understanding of and ability to work with volunteers and paid staff at all levels within the development and governance structure of Mercy Ships.
    • An approach, personal bearing and philosophy that are an extension and representative of the commitment of the Mercy Ships Board of Directors, Founder/President, Staff, donors and volunteers.
    • The ability to command respect from first impressions; to sustain the respect and gain the confidence of others in a first impression setting and, ability to build and ever-deepening relationships with donors, colleagues, staff, subordinates and volunteers.
    • An ability to organize one's work and inspire a well-functioning, productive, creative and collegial Marketing team.
    • Strong strategic, creative, analytical, and organizational skills.
    • Experience in leading and managing highly-productive teams, especially in the field of marketing.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills and a deep understanding of the areas of writing, editing, design and production schedules.
    • Computer literacy in the Microsoft Office suite of programs, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
    • Experience working with volunteers is desirable. Previous experience with or knowledge of Mercy Ships, other health/medical care organizations or similar global institutions desirable.
    • Candidate must be willing to reside in or near the location of Mercy Ships International Operations Center.

Education And Experience

The requirements listed below are representative of the education and / or experience required.

    • Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or related field is required; a Graduate Degree (MBA) preferred.
    • Five to ten years of demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in the design and execution of a comprehensive marketing program.
    • Successful completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training will be required within the first year.
