Chief Operating Officer  
Summary:  Leads the Operational functions of Mercy Ships including Human Resources, International Programs, International Operations, Marine Operations and Information Services. Key responsibilities to include identifying opportunities, weaknesses, threats and strengths in the Mercy Ships business model with a goal to improve the organizational structure and improve efficiency of daily operations. To achieve this, the Chief Operating Officer assesses and studies Mercy Ships business functions ranging from externally focused recruiting and fund-raising practices in national markets through to programmatic delivery processes in the field. Key to this role is finding solutions which account for and embrace the diversity of the Mercy Ships faith based multi-national community of paid and volunteer staff spread around the world, and the varied national cultures we serve through ships.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Include But Not Limited To)

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Develops and oversees a team of top talent executives in the key leadership roles of assigned areas, including developing succession plans for all VP and Director level roles.
  • Oversee the creation of operations strategies, policies and procedures with an eye for thoroughness, verbiage, legal compliance.
  • Oversee the day to day operations keeping the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) apprised of significant events.
  • Diagnose root causes of organizational opportunities, develop solutions, and execute course of action to implement organizational improvements.
  • Oversee the development and execution of the annual and long range plan for MSO.
  • Make recommendations regarding the effectiveness and sustainability of organizational reporting structure, communication tiers and meeting rhythms.
  • Analyze use of and investment in technology to maximize performance and minimize risk.
  • Manage and lead team as required such as, reorganization projects, administrative processes improvements, software introduction and maximization and business model improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Must be able to work effectively in a matrix environment, particularly influencing without final decision authority and leading while not owning desired outcomes.
  • Sufficient computing proficiency to use company intranet, portfolio, email and other collaborative and management information tools.
