Description:  

The Company Security Officer oversees the management of the security functions required to support the maritime activities of Mercy Ships in accordance with the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code, flag-state administration requirements and company policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to) To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Monitor, report, and advise on security concerns in the maritime environment and shipping industry, especially in the regions in which Mercy Ships works, including regional, continental and global influences and trends.
  • Monitor and report on new security strategies, tactics and operational standards for maritime security to the Global Security Director and other managers.
  • Liaise regularly with the Programs Security Officer on emerging threats and security conditions.
  • Liaise regularly with the Maritime Safety Manager for maritime security requirements.
  • Timely distribute relevant maritime security information to the operational managers of the organization.
  • Maintain a maritime security profile/ risk register for each country that a Mercy Ships could visit in the selected region of programmatic activities.
  • Manage the Ship Security Officers (SSOs) in their role of supervising the local security function on their assigned vessels to include provision of equipment, training and effective communication.
  • Manage the engagement Ship Security Guards including both volunteers and contract mariners with HR department.
  • Research and recommend adequate training courses in maritime and personnel security for the SSO and relevant Mercy Ships personnel.
  • Ensure each vessel maintains an approved and effective Ship Security Plan, with supporting controlled documents.
  • Maintain the maritime security policies, procedures, and instructions in the security management system to achieve consistency within the fleet in coordination with Marine Operations.
  • Advise the Global Security Director on operational budget requirements.
  • Support the Business Continuity Plan and Crisis Management Team of the organization as required.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Ability to travel internationally for periods up to six weeks
