Senior Director for Education Training and Advocacy
Summary:  
Description:  The Senior Director for Education, Training, and Advocacy oversees the development and coordination of quality, culturally-appropriate medical education programs.  Coordinating with other IP Teams, the Director is responsible for ensuring proper utilization of MCB resources (on ship and off) to advance the IP strategy for health systems strengthening.  The Director accomplishes this aim through management of Africa-based MCB personnel, developing education partnerships, and actively learning from in-field experiences for continual program improvement.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities (Include But Not Limited To)

Core

    • Provides leadership for medical education initiatives, collaborates with IP Teams for strategic alignment with health systems strengthening approaches.  
    • Drives improvement and better integration within the medical capacity building internal processes, systems and programming that demonstrates best practice in in stewardship of resources.
    • Collaborate with Programs DMS teams and Operations Projects Teams (as appropriate) for set up and continual support of training infrastructure, including SIM Lab, IT Infrastructure, and classroom.
    • Leads MCB team to prepare an MCB strategy to propose for approval within the IP program/project processes. 
    • Lead the development and implementation of strategies to deliver effective medical training and educational activities, to ensure accomplishment of the mission and vision of Mercy Ships.
    • Collaborating with MELD/PDD, providing input in the process of building assessment tools to properly understand educational needs in target countries.
    • Support and coordinate the medical education needs and requests of partner countries, within the strategic scope of Mercy Ships.
    • Leads the medical education team enabling them to deliver the highest standard of departmental, interdepartmental, and cross-organizational teamwork and service.
    • Maintain and develop a network of consulting experts in medical education.
    • Provide professionally crafted proposals for training delivery and support for submission within the appropriate IP approval structures..
    • Develop or identify curriculum with partners employing appropriate state of the art medical training tools including remote education, simulation based cognitive and skills training, and facilitated learning classrooms.
    • Gather educational outcome data at appropriate levels and collaborate on medical research opportunities.
    • Collaborate with other educational organizations and individuals on delivery of training and development of educational initiatives.

Leadership

    • Manage the recruitment and selection of new staff, complete performance reviews, and maintain development plans and succession plans.

Management

    • Provide ongoing direction to subordinate managers to ensure resources are well coordinated and all issues are appropriately communicated.
    • Ensure execution of International Programs plans, policies and priorities within the area of responsibility.
    • Develop and review budgets for the area of responsibility to ensure they comply with stated goals, guidelines, and objectives.
    • Provide cross-functional assistance on an as needed basis to other programmatic areas within Mercy Ships.

Performance

    • Regularly search for and identify opportunities for delivering high customer satisfaction.
    • Demonstrate year-over-year quality and process improvements, resulting in improved efficiency, increased productivity and/or cost reduction opportunities.
    • Establish metrics to monitor performance of the area of responsibility, and ensure operational metrics are collected and reviewed on a regular basis with the VP IP.
    • Proactively stay well-versed on programmatic / global surgery developments and initiatives, providing guidance and recommendations to peers and the VP IP.

External stakeholders

    • Represents Mercy Ships faith-based identity with authority and grace.
    • Positions Mercy Ships as an organization of choice for excellence in program policy, delivery and support for both institutional and individual donors.
    • Supports the corporate relations department in positioning Mercy Ships with external stakeholders, including the media and Christian stakeholders.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Education And Experience

The requirements listed below are representative of the education and / or experience planning and/or utilizing medical simulation for education preferred.  

    • Strong recommendation for a Physician, and an active member or recent alumni of Mercy Ships.
    • Bachelor's degree, with five years experience is required. Doctor of Medicine degree (M.D.), Public Health, strong recommendation for Medical Education experience, with simulation management experience preferred.  Health Administration, International Development, or related field is preferred. Experience may be substituted for education.
    • Proven experience of at least 5 years in managing technical assistance, medical capacity building and/or training activities to health care organizations, health departments and/or faith and community-based organizations.
    • Successful completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training will be required within the first year.
